Frequently Asked Questions About Our Water System

How many wells are there?

Our water system has three wells; they are drilled, and each has a submerged pump. No more than two pumps will run simultaneously.

Is there a storage tank?
Yes, our 300,000 gallon storage tank is a reservoir that provides the water to our homes, businesses and fire hydrants. It typically can (if necessary) supply water for about 2 days, even without the pumps running at all.

What if there is a power outage for an extended period?
Our generator can provide power to our water pumps in the event that Northeast Utilities power is not available. It can run for days using LP gas as the fuel. During widespread power outages, water consumption often decreases, so our storage tank and generator should provide water during this kind of emergency situation.

Who maintains the Tariffville water system?
We employ a Certified Water Plant Operator to ensure the entire system is running properly. This person periodically takes water samples which are sent out for testing, flushes water hydrants to remove sand and mineral deposits from the water mains, supervises the repair of leaks and breaks in water lines ranging from 8 inches (water mains) to 3/4 inch (pipe to residences).
